How to Handle Birth Procedures in Georgia
Registering children born abroad is extremely important for future citizenship and identification processes. Births in Georgia must be reported both to Georgian authorities and, for Turkish citizens, to the Republic of Turkey. In this guide, based on the experience of Cosmos Legal Law Firm experts, we explain step by step how birth procedures in Georgia are carried out.
1. Birth Certificate (Hospital Report)
The hospital or medical center where the birth occurs issues an official birth certificate. This document includes information such as the child’s name, date and time of birth, parents’ details, and the place of birth.
2. Civil Registry Procedures
After obtaining the birth certificate, the parents must apply to the Civil Registry Office in Georgia to officially register the birth. Required documents for the application include:
-
Birth report
-
Passports or ID cards of both parents
-
Marriage certificate (if available)
-
Application form
Once the registration is complete, an official birth registration certificate is issued for the child.
3. Citizenship Status
Georgian citizenship law is primarily based on the principle of jus sanguinis (citizenship by bloodline).
-
If either parent is a Georgian citizen, the child automatically acquires Georgian citizenship at birth.
-
If both parents are foreign nationals, the child retains the parents’ nationality. Being born in Georgia alone does not confer citizenship.
4. Birth Notification for Turkish Citizens
Turkish citizens must report the birth of their child in Georgia to Turkey. Parents should submit the required documents to the Turkish Embassy in Tbilisi or the Consulate General in Batumi. Required documents include:
-
Georgian birth registration certificate
-
Birth report
-
Parents’ passports and ID cards
-
Marriage certificate (if available)
After submission, the birth is registered in Turkey’s population registry, and a Turkish identity card can be issued for the child.
